Onyx Engineers is led by our Principal Engineer, Justin George Tzannes.
Justin is passionate about problem-solving processes and is very analytically driven to deeply understand concepts/problems and aim to deliver the best possible outcomes and solutions.
With over 15 years of experience in the engineering industry, he is highly skilled and capable of tackling a wide spectrum of disciplines that include steel, timber, concrete, aluminium, glazing construction across many different sets of legislations and engineering requirements.
Under his belt, he has thousands of inspections from which to draw experience in these different fields and has successfully delivered small projects through to larger projects such as apartment buildings and bridges.
He regularly delivers effective solutions for his clients, and maintains strong relationships built off trust and good service.

Summary of experience
Justin has 15+ years experience in the field of Structural engineering design across many disciplines including steel, timber, concrete, aluminium, glazing structures, including modifications and critical condition/ investigation reporting of existing structures. He has acted as team leader, principal designer, and project manager for a range of clients that include government, institutional, commercial and private.

Cable Bridge Structure Design. Project life-cycle collaboration with architectural/consultant/client teams to co-ordinate full DA/CC/Construction Documentation of Concrete, Steel-Framed, Timber and/or Masonry Structural Design for a range of Commercial Building Structures including 12 storey apartment buildings, 3-Storey Mixed-Commercial, Fuel Stations, Quick-Service Restaurants. Luxury, Medium and High Density Residential projects including Shoring/Piling, Retaining Walls, Footings, Slabs/Beams, Columns, Walls, 3D Lateral and Dynamic Analysis. Building fit-out engineering including aluminium, glazing and material-board joinery design.

1000+ onsite inspections of reinforced concrete elements including Shotcrete Walls, Capping Beams, Waffle Pod Slabs, Footings, Columns, Walls, Slabs, Piles and Structural Anchoring.

Assessment and reporting of Masonry, Concrete and Steel Structures, including analysis and recommendations for post-collision structures. Third-party reviews of structures with suspected structural non-compliance, reporting on the structural significance of masonry and concrete cracking, and general condition reporting of building elements including timber framing, ceilings, footings, slabs and steel structures.

300+ onsite inspections, including experience as a Major Transfer Slab Inspector. Individually certified 500mm–1200mm slabs across more than 30 construction sites, with experience in post-tension modelling and concrete slab design.

1100+ formwork inspections and extensive experience in formwork design and certification, including slab and beam formwork (conventional and proprietary), crane loading platforms, handrails, SWL platforms, vertical formwork (columns and walls), steel bracing and shoring, multi-storey backpropping arrangements and procedures, large-scale scaffold systems, and unique temporary works solutions for complex construction challenges.
